Purpose: Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) is a useful technique that can be applied to assess the nerve functionality at the end of the first side lobectomy in a planned total resection to prevent the bilateral injury of the RLN. Follicular adenoma in ectopic thyroid. A case-report

Highlights • Ectopic thyroid is thyroidal tissue located far from its anatomic place. • A patient under our observation displayed left submandibular swelling. • The FNAC test report described a follicular adenoma. • Based on the FNAC diagnosis, we surgically removed the mass. • The post-operative follow-up was uneventful.

AIM OF THE STUDY The surgical success rate and clinical outcome after surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism were evaluated in a prospective long-term follow-up study. PATIENTS AND METHODS 407 patients, 396 with the first manifestation, 6 with recurrent and 5 with persistent disease underwent operation from August 1, 1987 to August 15, 1999. All patients were prospectively investigated in a long-term follow-up study and underwent reexaminations at regular surveillance intervals. The postoperative course is known in 93.9% of all patients. Introduction: In spite of a low incidence of complications during thyroidectomy, there is a widespread tendency to extend hospitalization at least until postoperative second day. The need of a rebalancing between costs and profits had led us to revise the hospitalization’s duration. Methods: We reviewed our early experience (129 patients candidated to total thyroidectomy as ordinary hospitalization from 2001 to 2002) identifying the causes of hospitalization’s delay both preoperatively and in discharge.
